Hello, would you like us to conduct an interview with you?
Woody: Yes, I'll just get my beer. Woody, how did you first get involved in Goals? Woody: I started playing in the Brazil United team on a Friday night when I was in Year 10. It was Yogesh's idea to start the team and it was originally me, Yogesh, Gafa, Tetley and I can't remember the rest. Can you remember your first match? What did it feel like? Woody: I was nervous in our first proper match against Allstars. We didn't expect to win and we didn't. But I was happy as I got my first goal in that game, although we got beat 3-1. Then Brazil United was merged into Pool's Wonders, how were your Pool's Wonders days? Woody: Pool's Wonders started a bit poor, but then it started coming together and we went on a little winning streak. I enjoyed Saturday mornings playing for them, although we did have a bit of a strange team name. What did you learn at Pool's Wonders? Woody: (thinking) Hmmm, I learned what it was like to win a few games.
During those days, you faced Meanwood many times. How did you feel towards them back then?
Woody: They were always better than us on paper and they were feared by everyone. Although when we played them we would raise our game, they were always the better team. You lost many close encounters with them, surely you felt some resentment? Woody: I didn't like losing to them, but we just eventually had to accept that they were better as a team and more experienced, we were still new to the goals style of football when they beat us. During your youth days, were there any players that you disliked? Woody: Yeah, there was some little shite from Real Smeaton. I don't even know his name but he thought that he was a real gangster. I would love to play him again these days. How did you join Meanwood?
Woody: It happened VERY fast. I hadn't been playing at Goals for a while due to work and then suddenly one night Gafa called me up and asked me if I wanted to start playing in the 6-a-side Mens League. Then next Monday we started. What did it feel like when you signed for Meanwood? Woody: I was happy to be in a team with friends and playing against teams who were not little kids. Can you remember your first match? Woody: Yes, I was very nervous in my first 6-a-side Mens League game. We were playing one of the best teams at Goals and I found it quite exiting. I somehow managed to score a goal, which was a great confidence boost, although we lost 6-1. Was it a major step up from the youth league to the mens league? Woody: Yes, it was totally different. Everybody was keener to win. Who are the hardest Mens League teams you've faced? Woody: (thinking) Hmmm, there are lots of hard teams but the teams that stand out the most are F.C. Headingley and The Untouchables. They were very well organised. And who have been the worst? Woody: The shittest team in 6-a-side were Wolfpack. We should have hammered them but we only won 3-1. In 5-a-side it must be Dan Kirkham or the old Grampa's 8 my Hampster. What is your favourite Meanwood moment? Woody: I enjoyed drawing 7-7 against OPL with a man down, but I really loved beating Roque Juniors. And your worst?
Woody: I didn't like ripping my shorts wide open and I didn't like drawing the last game against Roque Juniors when we should have won. Meanwood has recently had a gathering of spectators, how do you feel about this burst of fame and who is your favourite spectator? Woody: It's alright having people you know watching, unless you get beat. My favourite spectator has to be Jenna because she's nice. Has Jenna ever distracted you while playing for Meanwood? Woody: Nah, but it's just nice to know that she's there. Who have been your favourite past and present Meanwood players? Woody: Mckieth and Bissitt. Mckieth can just take the piss out of anyone with the ball and Bissitt can just muscle anyone. You're often described as a dirtier player than Sam Sawiuk, do you agree with this? Woody: I'm not the dirtiest but I'm stronger. Sam just tries to be dirty, which is his style and it pays off. What does the future hole for Woody and Meanwood? Woody: I'm happy playing 5-a-side in the league we are in and I have no plans to finish playing for a long time. And for Meanwood? Woody: Promotion, next season definitely. Thankyou for your time Woody: It's been a pleasure. |
